Reclaiming Shingwauk Hall

On behalf of the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre, the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association, Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig, Shingwauk Education Trust and Algoma University we are pleased to invite you to the official ceremonial opening of the Reclaiming Shingwauk Hall exhibition, an event of national historic significance. The Reclaiming Shingwauk Hall exhibition was developed and led by the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre.  It has been a Survivor-driven reclamation of the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School and issupported as part of a Healing and Reconciliation through Education initiative.

A private viewing opportunity will be available for Survivors and their families on  the morning of August 3, 2018; arrangements have been made for a sacred fire and cultural support will be available throughout the day.  The official ceremony of Reclaiming Shingwauk Hall will occur on August 3, 2018 at 2:00 pm in Shingwauk Hall, marking a significant milestone in our continued reconciliation efforts.  The ceremony has been planned to coincide with the 2018 Shingwauk Gathering and Conference scheduled August 3-5th.

Reclaiming Shingwauk Hall is dedicated to the generations of Survivors who attended Indian Residential Schools across North America with the exhibition presenting over 110 years of history of the Shingwauk Indian Industrial and Residential Schools.  It is part of an ongoing project to honour the experiences, resilience, and healing of the Survivors of Shingwauk and the affiliated Wawanosh Indian Residential Schools.
